| Course description | The Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Dermatology group of teaching and clinical experiences is referred to as the Senses course. Patients attend clinics with disorders of sensory organs but only some will complain of sensory impairment, especially in the dermatology clinic, and not all sensory organs are considered within the course. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Otolaryngology
To understand the pathology and clinical presentation of common conditions affecting the upper aero-digestive tract
To understand which symptoms and signs signify potentially serious disease
To understand the management of upper airway obstruction
To appreciate the handicap, educational and social consequences of hearing loss at different ages and the rehabilitation of patients with hearing loss
Be familiar with appropriate investigations in head and neck disease
To understand the aetiology, presentation and management of malignant disease in the head and neck
Ophthalmology
To understand the pathology and clinical presentation of common conditions affecting the eye and visual system.
To understand which symptoms and signs signify potentially serious disease
Be familiar with appropriate investigations in ophthalmology
To appreciate the handicap, educational and social consequences of visual loss at different ages.
Dermatology
To acquire an understanding of the scientific basis of dermatology.
To relate knowledge of skin structure to the physical signs of skin disease.
To take a coherent dermatological history and be able to describe cutaneous physical signs using appropriate terminology.
To recognise common skin diseases
To recognise important cutaneous signs of systemic disease or adverse reactions to drugs.
To understand the principles of dermatological treatment.
To appreciate the impact of chronic skin disease on patients and their families in terms of education, employment and interpersonal relationships.

Assessment Information
| - ENT/Dermatology/Ophthalmology 100%; Assessment will be by a knowledge and interpretation examination; - Ophthalmology; Assessment of clinical skills within the clinics during the attachment. In order to be eligible to sit the exam, students must have a satisfactorily completed Ophthalmology Clinical Skills Sheet. |
