Course description | This is a for-credit course offered by the Office of Lifelong Learning (OLL); only students registered with OLL should be enrolled.
This course aims to look at winners of the prestigious Booker Prize. Our texts for this year will be William Golding¿s novel about human savagery Rites of Passage, Graham Swift¿s touching Last Orders and DBC Pierre¿s black comedy, Vernon God Little. We will also discuss Margaret Atwood¿s complex novel-within-a-novel, The Blind Assassin and finish up in India for Ruth Prawer Jhabvala¿s iconic Heat and Dust. Come along and discuss these novels in a relaxed atmosphere. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
¿ discuss texts confidently;
¿ assess literature based, to a certain extent, on their own close reading;
¿ place literature in its historical context;
¿ understand the various issues which affect the awarding of literary prizes.

Assessment Information
Open Studies 10 credit courses have one assessment. Normally, the assessment is a 2000 word essay, worth 100% of the total mark, submitted by week 12. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40%. There are a small number of exceptions to this model which are identified in the Studying for Credit Guide. |
