| Course description | THIS IS A FOR-CREDIT ONLY COURSE OFFERED BY THE OFFICE OF LIFELONG LEARNING (OLL); ONLY STUDENTS REGISTERED WITH OLL SHOULD BE ENROLLED.
A detailed examination of Greek art, architecture and archaeology of the archaic period (c. 800-500 BC). The course will focus on the archaeological sites of Athens (the Kerameikos, Agora and Acropolis), Corinth, Sparta and Delphi. This illustrated course will utilise the Edinburgh University cast and vase collections, looking at the art and material culture of the period. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have the ability to:
Describe the key developments, both chronologically and stylistically, of the art and architecture of Archaic Greece
Understand and be able to discuss the archaeological contexts for the material culture interpreted as 'art'
Have a coherent understanding of social and political functions of the material
Participate constructively and effectively in group discussion
Have the ability to develop and articulate critical interpretations of material culture based on source material while utilising secondary sources.

Assessment Information
| Open Studies 10 credit courses have one assessment. Normally, the assessment is a 2000 word essay, worth 100% of the total mark, submitted by week 12. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40%. There are a small number of exceptions to this model which are identified in the Studying for Credit Guide. |
