| Course description | This module is designed to consider legal and ethical challenges around public health, at each of the national, regional and international levels. It is less concerned with the nature and scope of the individual doctor/patient relationship and more concerned with community or communitarian considerations, such as protecting and promoting public health, responding to global threats to health, facilitating and governing research in the public interest, and balancing private and public interests within the dominant human rights paradigm which has taken on global significance in recent years. The module comprises 10 sessions, divided over five major themes: I. Public Health Law & Policy; II. Public Health Determinants and Responses; III. New Public Health Tools & Privacy; IV. Public Health Aspects of Medical Research; and V. Public Health and Commercialisation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- investigate the basic social and legal concepts and mechanisms that shape the public health discourse and public health itself;
- define core concepts such as human wellbeing, development, security, confidentiality, anonymisation, commercialisation, and more; and
- consider the role of public health measures as compared to more well-rehearsed principles applicable in the medical (clinical) context;
- form an understanding of the interplay between public health, human rights, development, commerce and security.
