Course description | Film Theory 1 is the first part of a course designed to make students familiar with major European film theories and various approaches to film analysis. The discussion will initially focus on theoretical contributions to early cinema and Eisenstein's articles on "Montage of Attractions". One of the themes studied in its modulations through various programmes will be the ongoing search of European filmmakers for concepts of the cinema and for film styles that are distinct from the classical cinema of Hollywood. The theoretical discussion will be combined with exercises in film analysis. |
