| Course description | This course examines a representative selection of medieval Welsh literature in English translation. Both prose and verse genres will be discussed both in the light of recent literary scholarship and under consideration of their social and historical background. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Students of this course have the opportunity to get an overview of Medieval Welsh Literature and an introduction to the state of scholarship and criticism in this field. |
Assessment Information
Students are required to complete two assignments. One is to write up a class presentation on a subject to be agreed (around 1500 words). The second consists of an essay (around 2000 words) giving an overview of one type of medieval Welsh literature; for example, early praise poetry, native prose texts, religious writing, Arthurian poetry or prose, love poetry, narrative verse etc. The chosen text is to be placed in its historical and literary context, making reference to the views of modern scholars. Guidance will be given on choice of text, approach, and coverage.
Equal weight is given to assessed course-work and to the Degree Examination. The class-work assignment is worth 50% and the Degree Examination is worth 50% of the overall mark for the course. |
