Course description | This course is being proposed as an advanced course in international business restricted to 4th year honours students. The course will have a special emphasis on the internationalization strategies of SMEs. The course is designed to build upon the basic knowledge and fundamental concepts that students will have gained in the prerequisite course Theoretical Foundations of International Business. The proposed course mainly draws from this theoretical background, and also introduces some new theoretical perspectives on internationalization. The course allows students to investigate complex international and interdisciplinary issues in more depth and through group work. The course will comprise lectures, assignments, presentations and discussions that develop the complexities of current debates on internationalization and globalization.
There are three types of assignments discussed in the lectures: BGS "building global skills", TMP "theory meets practice", and SC "solving cases". All the groups take all the assignments, but they are in charge of leading the discussion of two assignments (the lecturer will give the timetable in December). In the "building global skills" task, students will have business problems to solve, such as developing rationales about what products, brands or businesses might have potential when entering Kazakhstan. In the ¿theory meets practice¿ task, students will have a research article, book chapter, or magazine article to study, in order to find out how the theory presented in the lecture has been applied in practice. In the "solving cases" task, students will have a case to analyze from perspectives given in lectures. In addition to the assignments, each group will do a presentation in which they analyze the internationalization history of a selected company from the perspective of certain internationalization theories. |
