| Course description | An integrated introduction to spoken and written Japanese for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. The course will include kana writing (the Japanese phonetic writing), and an introduction to some kanji (Japanese Characters), approximately 150 to 250. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course.
This course is recommended as a continuation of Introductory Japanese 2 (ASST07002).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To provide a structured introduction to Japanese grammar
To enable students to read and write hiragana, katakana and about 150-250 kanji characters, and to use Japanese for simple spoken and written communication. |
Assessment Information
| Continuous assessment (40%): class tests, compositions, presentations and participation (throughout the year); Degree exam (60%): 3 hour written paper 50%, Oral 10%. |
