| Course description | Indicative course content
This module will enable students to explore not only individual works of art but the social and cultural contexts in which they are produced. Using appropriate methodologies students will look at a range of objects produced within a defined time-frame. Although the module will focus on western art, students will have the opportunity to consider the relationship with artefacts from other cultures.
Aims of course
1 To introduce students to the broader cultural, economic, social and political context in which works of art and designed objects are made and received.
2 To provide students with appropriate methodologies for analysing and interpreting cultural practices in context
3 To develop skills in critical analysis using appropriate vocabularies and skills in expression

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe and analyse a range of works of art and designed objects in different media, and further critically appraise and interrogate the social, cultural, political and historical context in which they are produced
2. Show skills in the use of appropriate means for explaining ideas both verbally and in writing.
3. Demonstrate confidence and fluency in written critical discussion of works of art and designed objects and the environment in which they are produced. |
