| Course description | Indicative course content
Students will be introduced to the methodologies and techniques that help to move their understanding of art objects on from subjective 'art appreciation' to competent objective analysis. Emphasis will be placed on direct observation supported by informed reading and participation in classroom-based discussions as well as gallery visits. Although the module will focus on western art, students will have the opportunity to consider the relationship with artefacts from non-western cultures.
Aims of course
1 To introduce students to the methodologies of visual and contextual analysis
2 To enable students to achieve competence in visual literacy appropriate to this level
3 To enable students to interrogate works of art and designed objects to achieve understanding of the relationships between form, function and meaning
Mode of delivery
Gallery based study day consisting of lecture, discussion, visit and supporting materials.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Analyse a range of works of art and designed objects in different media, using appropriate descriptive and analytical vocabularies and appropriate methodologies
2. Show a clear understanding of the relationship between made objects and the designer's or maker's intentions
3. Demonstrate confidence and fluency in the verbal and written critical discussion of works of art and designed objects |
