Course description | This course will explore the comparative contexts of studio and laboratory cultures, as the study of methodologies, tools and techniques deployed in fields of knowledge that bring insight to the physical world around us. This studio provides valuable intelligence on the challenging area of collaborative work in the intertwined knowledge systems of art and science, by identifying common philosophies, values and techniques, to identify synergies in art/science cultures.
This course is open to students with an interest in how creativity and imagination generate insight and innovation, culminating in individual or group proposals and/or built forms that assert fresh insights and new ways of thinking to the field of cross disciplinary collaboration. To enhance practice this course has a series of reading groups and thematic seminars to explore precedents of creative practice and contemporary ideas.
Aims:
To enrich awareness of cross disciplinary theory and practice;
To document precedents of collaboration between art and science;
To explore the links between creativity, insight and innovation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Reflection: document a series of precedents through personal research interests related to the course subject area
2. Exploration: undertake personal research into a specific area of cross disciplinary theory
3. Synthesis: develop to a detailed level a proposal for an art/science collaboration |
Assessment Information
Students will be assessed through a submission that comprises developmental stages of a research proposal for art/science collaboration. The proposal can include works that demonstrate an experimental, speculative and/or theoretical proposition which brings attention to cross disciplinary understanding and its inherent values.
The course will offer a structured approach for development through individual tutorials and group discussion while, given the multidisciplinary make-up of the studio cohort, collaborative group projects are encouraged. The criteria for assessment are aligned with the learning outcomes and course aims.
