| Course description | This Honours level optional course provides an analysis of the mass media as institutions in industrial and industrialising societies, and considers the position of sport in the print, broadcast and electronic media from sociological, comparative and historical perspectives. Different approaches to the study of the mass media in society and the process by which media messages are produced, distributed and interpreted are critically assessed. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
-Understand the relationship between the mass media and modern sport.
-Appreciate the theoretical and methodological issues raised by sociological research into the mass media
-Apply these concepts to the analysis of sport in the mass media
-Critically assess the presentation of sport in the mass media |
Assessment Information
1. One detailed essay plan of no more than 1200 words with annotated notes and references (Formative) (30%)
2. One written essay of no more than 3000 words. For example:
To what extent does the media coverage of sport help to construct the "imagined community" of the nation? (Summative) (70%)
