Course description	This option explores the question of national identity in Central and Eastern Europe in the context of actual or aspirant EU membership. Although historical context will be important, the aim is to place emphasis on how national identity is expressed by means of cultural productions. Topics will include how a state re-negotiates, re-creates and re-invents its identity when former collective political unions collapse; the state's role historically in managing and manipulating cultural heritage in order to assert a particular conception of national identity; the role of the mass media; how the process is evidenced through cultural productions such as film and popular music; the role of cultural institutes and museums; and invented traditions such as state-sponsored folklore festivals. Although reference will be made to all the post-Soviet states which have entered or are on the threshold of EU membership, particular attention will be placed on Hungary, Croatia and Poland. For reasons of comparison, reference will also be made to states more distant from the process of EU entry, chiefly Ukraine, Serbia, Bosnia and FYR Macedonia.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students will have 1. gained a general knowledge and understanding of the salient points concerning the interface between state, cultural heritage and contemporary cultural forms in the former Soviet states of Central and Eastern Europe. 2. acquired a detailed knowledge and understanding of selected topics relating to the assertion of national identity in one of these countries; 3. acquired skills of independent learning and research, including the interpretation of film and other media 4. gained practice in the use of the internet and other modern sources of information 5. used their reading and other forms of intellectual enquiry to produce analytic pieces of written work of extended length.
