Course description | The module has three aims: to encourage students to see how computational methods are increasingly relevant to biomedical research, to enable students to become proficient at utilising relevant databases on the WWW, and to provide training in how to perform common bioinformatics tasks.
Topics covered include: molecular sequence databases - how to effectively navigate the vast public DNA and protein databases; genome databases - looking at how to find what you need from the wealth of data in whole-genome datasets; microarrays: these allow the assaying of the expression levels from thousands of genes simultaneously, we shall cover microarray technology, the bioinformatics techniques needed to analyse the resulting datasets, and study applications in cell biology, physiology and neuroscience; embryo gene expression databases - looking at the structure and use of such resources, focusing on the Mouse Atlas database; neuroinformatics - looking at recent developments in databases for the representation and analysis of data in neuroscience.
Teaching will be by seminars introducing key topics and student-led discussion sessions at which you shall give short presentations on either selected papers or the results of practical computer-exercises. Supervised computing practicals will cover the relevant software (mainly on the WWW) and enable students to undertake further computational work independently. |
