Course description | The aims are to gain understanding and critical appreciation of the principles, methods of research and current knowledge in selected aspects of mammalian neuroendocrinology. The objectives are to consider the roles of 1)magnocellular neurones by specifically studying the role of vasopressin neurones in osmoregulation and the control of oxytocin neurones in parturition and lactation and 2) parvocellular neuroendocrine function by studying control of gonadotrophin and growth hormone secretion. We will also consider the generation of rhythms in oxytocin, GH and GnRH secretion and how they can be investigated using modelling instead of animal experiments. The course will consist of seminars, talks, and computer models, illustrating experimental design and self learning in the library. Students will give presentations, in form of talks and posters, on selected topics, and prepare handouts to accompany their presentations. A poster session in the last week will be assessed. |
