Course description | This course provides students with knowledge of advanced debates around the role of spatial imaginaries and methodologies in the social sciences and humanities. The subject uses directed readings and seminar discussions to explore the place of spatial theory and method in constructing distinctive social scientific and other knowledges. The course also examines the relationship between academically-formed spatial knowledges and other frameworks of spatial and environmental knowledge, including the spheres of policy and the everyday. The subject is designed to be responsive to the specific research interests of students and requires students to read in a specialist area relevant to the design of their proposed research.
The course aims to provide:
- Knowledge of current methodological debates in the field of society and space
- Appreciation of the varied cultures and histories of geographical and spatial knowledge formation and their relevance to contemporary methodological perspectives
- Ability to synthesise and critically analyse a range of debates associated with methodology, in written and verbal form
