Course descriptionIntroduction to the main epistemological theories of classical antiquity and Hellenistic period. Starting with Plato's analysis of the problem of knowledge in Theaetetus, we shall go on to consider Aristotle's theories of truth and scientific method and the problem of criterion in the epistemology of Hellenistic period (Stoic, Epicurean and Sceptic).
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Early Greek Philosophy (GREE10014) AND Early Greek Philosophy in Translation (CLTR10008)
Students MUST have passed: Mind, Matter and Language (PHIL08014) AND Knowledge and Reality (PHIL08017)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To develop further the philosophical skills and to extend as well as to deepen the philosophical knowledge acquired in previous philosophy courses; particularly, history of philosophy.

Mid-term essay (1500 words) worth 40%
End of semester essay (2500 words) 60%
ALL students will be encouraged to do a presentation
