Course description | The course will follow a thread of aesthetic theory that begins with Kant and continues in development and reaction from Hegel to postmodernism. It will in turn highlight the inter-relation of the preceding with issues in metaphysics and epistemology. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will be able to:
- grasp and analyse the legacy in aesthetics of Kant;
- grasp and analyse how some of Kant?s successors responded to and reacted against this legacy;
- describe key elements of the influence in aesthetics of marxism, modernism, poststructuralism, postmodernism, psychoanalysis, and feminism;
- grasp and explain the overlaps of the preceding with metaphysics and epistemology;
- understand something of the style and method peculiar to Continental Philosophy;
- bring analytic and critical tools to bear in reading and writing about Continental thinkers.
