Course description | WAR and CULTURE invites students who are interested in connecting the sphere of intimate social life to that of abstract political discourse and scrutinizing the latter in the light of concrete human actions taking place in the former. Those who join the course will be encouraged to extend this interest to thinking about ways to reconcile some of the contradictions, moral as well as analytical, existing between our attitudes to premodern warfare and those to modern war.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
It is hoped that students will grasp the progression of anthropological knowledge on war and participate in thinking about how to advance this knowledge to a tool for more effective understanding of contemporary history. It is also expected that the course will offer an applied understanding of some of the key concepts and issues in kinship, religion and material culture studies.
