Course description | This practical and hands-on course provides an introduction to the main issues involved in the management and analysis of qualitative data and the use of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis software (CAQDAS).
Please note this is a web-based course supported by lectures, workshops and lab-based classes. Students are expected to work through exercises and readings in their own time.
The course is designed to complement the existing core research skills courses, to provide a foundation for students wishing to pursue intermediate and advanced qualitative skills training and to provide students with an introductory course in the management and analysis of qualitative data and the use of qualitative data analysis software. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. To provide an overview of types of qualitative data and data sources.
2. To provide an introduction to some of the theoretical, methodological and software issues relating to good qualitative research practice.
3. To provide an introduction to the processes of qualitative data analysis.
4. To provide a practical guide to a CAQDAS package and its use. |
Assessment Information
Self-tests and practical exercises which students will work through during the course will build towards the final assessment in the form of a written research report. Students will be required to complete an analysis of a nominated set of data and critically reflect on their data management and analysis and on their use of CAQDAS software.

Syllabus |
The course is divided into 3 blocks.
Block 1 covers:
1. An introduction to types of qualitative data, good research practice and the conventions of qualitative data management.
2. Preliminaries of data analysis: language, text and transcription.
3. Data characteristics, comparisons and beginning a thematic analysis
Block 2 covers:
1. Developing a thematic analysis
2. Using codes, categories and themes: retrieving, connecting and thinking about your data.
3. Lab-based training on NVivo
Block 3 covers:
1. Building your analysis.
2. Grounded theory.
3. Content analysis.
4. The impact of CAQDAS on the 'craft' of qualitative research |
