| Course description | Option 1 - Management of Social Work Services in the Criminal Justice System.
This course is designed for experienced professionally qualified social work managers who work in the criminal justice system. The aim of the course is to introduce students to management theory and concepts, which apply to the public sector and social work.
Option 2 - Skills in Direct Practice and Resource Development.
This course is designed for experienced professionally qualified social work practitioners who work in the criminal justice system. The aim of the course is to examine in some detail knowledge, theory and practice issues relating to particular client groups, e.g. sexual offenders, mentally disordered offenders. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Option 1 Learning Objectives:
1. To examine the value base of social work management and develop a framework for understanding organisational structure, processes, and the managerial role.
2. To examine key components in the management of offender services and develop a range of skills, policies and practices to meet them.
3. To understand the management of staff working in the provision of services in the criminal justice system and the use of systems to apply modern management principles.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this module managers should be able to demonstrate effective management of a service and/or a group of staff within criminal justice social work. This will include:
- managing staff and resources
- managing systems to monitor and establish service standards
- managing the process of change to enhance service delivery.
Option 2 Learning Objectives:
1. To promote the acquisition of advanced skills in direct practice and resource development related to planned outcomes.
2. To develop expertise in specialist areas of social work in the criminal justice system.
3. To evaluate and promote models of best practice in direct practice and resource development.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this module practitioners will be able to demonstrate specialist and highly developed intervention within the criminal justice setting. This will include demonstrating:
- the principles of effective intervention
- advanced level of specialist knowledge
- leadership within specialist area |
Assessment Information
Management Option: Assessment for this course will be a 3000 word written assignment relating to subject matter covered in lectures. The aim of the assignment is to test students' knowledge and critical awareness of management theory and demonstrate application to their work context.
Practice Option: Assessment for this course will be a 3000 word written assignment relating to a specialist area of practice. Critical awareness and knowledge of relevant theory and research will be called for. |
