| Course description | The purpose of this course is to provide conceptual frameworks and case studies as a basis for an understanding the historical development of towns and cities. The reinvention of urban form provides a connecting theme in this course, which concentrates on the built environment and the economic, social, cultural, political and architectural influences in Scottish urban form and incorporates themes associated with regeneration and redevelopment. The course will also consider the imaginary landscape and the cultural construction of Scotland, as well as how heritage and conservation interests interact with historical perspectives of landscapes and environments. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
(a) Knowledge and understanding:
- understanding of major changes in the nature and history of Scottish towns and cities since 1700
- knowledge of how different disciplines approach the urban landscape
(b) Intellectual skills:
- ability to develop tight and coherent argument ? ability to evaluate and analyse a wide variety of sources
- ability to place local and regional urban landscape studies in the context of an international literature
(c) practical skills
- 'read' and interpret the physical characteristics of urban development
- develop a sense of spatial awareness in relation to the development of towns and cities
