Course description | This interdisciplinary course aims to provide linguistic training in reading Medieval Latin and to introduce students to the medieval techniques of analysing and commenting upon texts taught through the medieval school curriculum. The combination is designed to equip students with a practical and theoretical basis from which to approach the reading and interpretation of medieval Latin texts. Emphasis is placed on understanding contemporary medieval approaches to the composition and interpretation of texts, and the significance that the teaching and use of Latin had within the medieval curriculum. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- improved linguistic competence in reading medieval Latin texts;
- the ability to translate passages of medieval Latin (mainly prose) into English with the aid of appropriate dictionaries;
- an understanding of the way in which contemporary medieval theoretical approaches to texts, revealed through the medieval school curriculum, can provide a methodology for approaching medieval sources;
- an investigation (resulting in a 4,000 word essay) into an aspect of the medieval Latin reading curriculum, chosen by the student with guidance from the course instructors. |
