Course description | This course will commence by introducing the topic of power generation from fossil fuels and biomass. Students will acquire general knowledge of standard and advanced power generation technologies and understanding of their respective strengths and weaknesses. Consequently, based on this understanding, students will be introduced to a range of CO2 capture technologies, ranging from those commercially available to technologies still in the development stage. They will acquire a thorough understanding of each technology and its operating principle and will be able to associate particular CO2 capture technology to a relevant power generation process, taking into account strengths and weaknesses of each capture technology and its compatibility with different power generation processes. Following that, students will learn about the issues related to compression and transport of captured CO2 stream. They will be presented with different ways of CO2 transport and will become familiar with topics such as CO2 properties under transport conditions, impurities present in CO2 streams from different generation/capture systems and the effects of impurities on CO2 compression and transport. In addition, the risks associated with CO2 transport will be discussed. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
A good general understanding of CO2 capture technologies, the reasons for their deployment, operating principles and applications.
Understanding of captured CO2 treatment, its transport and related issues.
On the completion of this course, students should:
Be able to identify and explain the principle of major technologies currently in use or close to commercialisation.
Understand the directions in which the research into future technologies is heading.
Explain the problems related to the compression and transport of CO2 streams containing impurities and the associated risks.
