Course description | This course focuses on i) the genetic analysis of neurological conditions and ii) what we can learn about their casuses by investigation of the genes identified. The neurological conditions studied include motor neuron disease, Alzheimer's Disease, stroke, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Aims:
1)To provide an in-depth understanding of the genetics of selected neurological conditions and the genetics methods used to investigate the genetic component to these illnesses
2)To provide an overview of how this research has increased our understanding of the biological basis of these conditions
3) To encourage the development of skills in critical evaluation and presentation of the scientific literature
The course begins with a few introductory lectures. Subsequently, there are weekly topics with an introductory lecture followed by student presentation and class discussion.
