| Course description | This 20-credit course is designed to consider in some detail the wide variety of J.S. Bach&©s instrumental works (other than for solo keyboard): the concertos, including the Brandenburg Concertos as well as those for harpsichord(s), violin and others; the Orchestral Suites; instrumental chamber music including works for solo violin, flute and cello; sonatas with continuo and those with obbligato keyboard. Individual compositions will be studied in score, influences on the music (such as the Italian concerto form) will be investigated, performance practice issues will be considered, as well as what we know of the original performance situations and purposes for which the music was written. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| The students&© knowledge of Bach&©s industrious and extraordinary compositional activity will be increased, as will their understanding of the contexts in which these pieces were written. Their knowledge of the Italian concerto style and its fundamental significance in the first half of the eighteenth century will be enhanced; in some cases, performance issues will relate to music they themselves will encounter as executant musicians. |
Assessment Information
| Two c. 3000-word essays (weighting 40% each) and one presentation (20%); deadlines etc. to be the same as other Special History topics. |

| Academic description |
The aim of the course is to increase students&© awareness of the range and quality of Bach&©s music, and to introduce them to masterpieces in a variety of genres. |
