Course description | This course provides an introduction to Richard Wagner's complex roles as philosopher, composer, revolutionary and cultural barometer in 19th and 20th Germany. Students will study selected operas by Wagner together with his polemical prose writings. They will place Wagner in context of 19th-century German culture and society, and will explore his posthumous reception, in particular under the Nazi and communist regimes. Additional topics to be covered include Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, anti-semitism and German nationalism.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will become familiar with Wagner's operas. They will gain an understanding of his compositional style, his philosophies, and will develop an awareness of German culture and society in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Students will examine the roles that music can play in society and the impact that social and cultural currents can have on music. In particular students will develop an understanding of how music can be appropriated for political means. |
