| Course description | Background: 'New' infections emerge, and others are increasing in incidence. This Elective Course provides an opportunity to examine how and why this occurs and to study selected emerging/re-emerging infections in depth.
Organisation: The Elective Course relies heavily on self-directed learning although 4 overview lectures will be given during the course. After an initial briefing session, students will study key emerging/re-emerging infectious agents (eg, anthrax, ebola, HIV, lassa fever, malaria, MRSA and TB) under the guidance of facilitators who will meet with them regularly. Each student will study two particular organisms in depth (organism biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and pathology, clinical and public health aspects) and present an overview (using powerpoint) of the two agents to the group.
Assessment: For each student, each overview presentation will form 20% of the final mark and, thus, the two presentations constitute 40% of the final mark (hard copies will be made available to examiners alongside general assessment of student performance during presentation and discussion that follows). A review essay exam based on the in-course material forms a further 60% of the final mark. The essay exam will be set at the end of the course (under exam conditions) and will be double-marked.
