Course descriptionThe GI tract in health. Normal bacterial flora. Homeostasis. Food-borne infections and intoxications. Pathogenic mechanisms. Common themes: adhesion, toxin production, genetics, immune responses, symptoms, diagnosis. Emphasis on enterobacterial pathogens E. coli, Salmonella etc. Helicobacter pylori, Vibrio cholerae and Clostridium difficile (by lectures, student- and staff-led group discussion and student presentations). Food-borne pathogens. Student presentations on specific organisms and diseases. Final round-up.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Molecular Microbiology 3 (BILG09013) AND Medical Microbiology 3 (BIME09002)
