| Course description | 'Process of Care - Cardiovascular System' is one of the four courses covering all of the systems of the body. These integrated courses will bring together basic scientists and practicing clinicians to teach about the presentation, diagnosis and management of the diseases affecting the different body system. There will be integration with the clinical aspects of cardiovascular disease with underlying pathology, microbiology, pharmacology and surgical aspects of therapy. It will include a combination of lectures tutorials, clinico-pathological conferences, case based learning and bedside teaching with opportunities for clinical experience. Most of the teaching will take place within teaching hospitals although there will be some element from general practice. |

The course lasts for seven weeks. The first weeks focus on teaching clinical skills and relevant core information. Weeks 4-7 consolidates clinical skills, provides opportunity for clinical experience in cardiovascular disease and assessment. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Intended learning objectives are that students will understand the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of cardiovascular disease, to become competent at history taking and cardiovascular examination and know how the most common forms of cardiovascular disease are treated. In addition to acquiring a broad knowledge base, students should be able to demonstrate and understand that many patients in hospital have experienced a frightening and perhaps life-threatening cardiac event and can respond appropriately. They should be able to demonstrate competent diagnostic skills (e.g. history taking, examination, diagnostic summary), therapeutic skills (e.g. treatment, explanation and advice, reassurance and support) and practical skills (e.g. resuscitation, electrocardiography). |
Assessment Information
MCQ examination (60%),in course assessment of clinical skills (30%) and in course assessment of Personal and Professional Development (10%) held at the end of the 7 week rotation.
There are three components to the overall assessment for the year - an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), the in-course assessment as above, and portfolio case reports. All three components must be passed each with a minimum mark of 60%.
