Course description | This course provides training in the cellular and molecular events that underlie the development, progression and resolution of inflammatory responses. The major topics covered include (a) Initiation of inflammatory responses, (b) Regulation of inflammation and (c) Repair and resolution. The principal cell types involved in inflammation and control of their function by inflammatory mediators, chemokines and cytokines will be considered. Innate immune effector mechanisms and tissue repair mechanisms will be discussed, with particular emphasis on restoration of normal tissue function. The course will have a combination of seminar-based teaching and student-led moderated discussion sessions to develop the main teaching themes. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To provide a thorough background to the basic principles of inflammatory processes.
The course is as an elective research theme for the MSc Biomedical Sciences Programme to provide students with the opportunity to acquire relevant research skills and associated generic/transferable skills,.
The course will provide students with thorough and specific preparation for 3 year PhD training in Biomedical Sciences at MSc and en route to the PhD |
