| Course description | The course introduces students to that part of EU Justice and Home Affairs law which deals with the evolution of an EU immigration and asylum law. Students begin by studying the evolution of EU competences and institutions dealing with justice and home affairs matters, in the EU and EC Treaties, and then spend the latter part of the course looking in detail at mobility into and across the Member States for third country nationals. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand and critically analyse the development of the European Union as an 'area of freedom, justice and security', in particular in respect of the evolution of policies on immigration and asylum;
- understand and assess EU policy in relation to the free movement of persons, immigration, asylum and treatment of refugees;
- draw links between EU policy and relevant conceptual ideas and frameworks such as 'securitisation' and 'security'; the idea of 'Europe'; social inclusion and exclusion; the rule of law, justice and human rights; citizenship.
