| Course description | This course aims to inform students about the data and methods used in criminological research, and provide an introductory knowledge of how to use these in specific research projects. A further aim is to enable students to evaluate the methodological strategies adopted by other researchers and develop a critical appreciation of the problems and possibilities presented by different research methods, techniques and data. A key learning outcome is to develop critical awareness of the most appropriate methods to use to answer different criminological questions, while taking account of ethical issues which arise in conducting criminological research.
Details of Assessments: This course is assessed through a short research report based on a small-scale piece of empirical research carried out by the student.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. To provide students with a knowledge of the data and methods utilized in criminological research
2. To enable students to evaluate the methodological strategies adopted by other researchers and to develop a critical appreciation of the problems and possibilities presented by the different research methods, techniques and data
3. To provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to design a simple criminological research project
4. To give students experience in carrying out and writing up a short research project on an approved criminological topic of their choosing |
