| Course description | The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to investigate key characteristics of the linguistic varieties of English as spoken in the North of England, both in terms of their claim to be recognised as separate Englishes, and in terms of the putative, and perhaps developing construct 'General Northern'. This will involve an engagement with attempts to define 'the North' more generally, and with the issues of sociolinguistic identity involved in speakers' conscious and unconscious choices as to how they should speak. The course's key aim in this respect, however, will be to consider how these factors interact with the (changing) linguistic systems which are associated with these areas. The fundamental aim will be to discuss the 'non-standard' phonological and morphosyntactic features of these varieties in the detail that they deserve. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
* explain the issues involved in the definition of the 'linguistic north'
* analyse key linguistic features found in the varieties of Northern English
* describe the issues involved in the recognition of a 'General Northern' quasi-standard
* conduct their own research into the varieties of English spoken in northern England, if they so choose. |
