Course description | The aim of this course is to provide students with a critical understanding of the principles of health economics and of issues arising from their application to policy issues.
The course examines how economic evaluation is used to inform decision making in health care. Starting with economic concepts of scarcity, opportunity costs and efficiency, the course assesses the role of economic evaluation in decisions about alternative resource allocations and priority setting at various levels in a health care system. Among the topics examined are measuring and valuing outcomes, study design, types of economic evaluation, discounting, uncertainty, sensitivity analysis; the impact of economic evaluation in practice, its limits, and implementation problems.
