| Course description | This course will provide students with a detailed understanding of infectious disease in a global policy context and with a critical awareness of the theory and practice of their control and prevention. It examines the theory underlying infectious disease control, including the agents and their transmission routes, infectivity, host susceptibility, transmission dynamics, incidence, and prevalence. It will examine the epidemiology of infectious diseases and their global disease burden, and critically assess major contemporary strategies for the control of these diseases. The course critically examines key principles in infectious disease control including outbreak management and surveillance methods. It will assess both the principles underlying vaccination and immunisation and the methods for monitoring and evaluating immunisation programmes. The course will enable students to develop strategies for the control of infectious disease and plan and critically evaluate infectious disease control programmes. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
? demonstrate a detailed understanding of the significance of infectious diseases in global public health and of the transmission methods and epidemiology of key infectious diseases
? access and analyse key data resources for infectious disease control
? critically evaluate the principles of investigation, control and prevention of infectious diseases
? demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles and role of surveillance in identifying infectious disease priorities for a population and monitoring control strategies
? understand and apply the principles of investigating an outbreak
? critically assess the different options for the control of infectious diseases
? understand the principles underlying vaccination and immunisation and critically assess methods for monitoring and evaluating immunisation programmes
? develop strategies for the control of infectious disease and critically evaluate infectious disease control programmes.
