| Course description | This course is based primarily on works translated into English. The course will first provide a methodological introduction and a historical introduction to the background and rise of Islam, the life of its Prophet and the early appearance of the main sectarian divisions. It will then concentrate on its two primary sources, the Qur=an and the Hadith. It will cover their nature and history, and will examine particular aspects of Islamic practice and belief through these sources. The main focus is on gaining familiarity with the sources themselves. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:
1. become familiar with some of the main methodologies in Islamic Studies,
2. understand the background and rise of Islam in its historical setting,
3. possess familiarity with selected Qur=an and Hadith texts,
4. understand the content and significance of important practices and beliefs of Islam.

Examination: one 2-hour exam (60%)
Course Work: one essay of 2,000 words and seminar contribution (30%)
