| Course description | The course will approach the problem by looking first at the component parts of the British Isles which finally came together in 1603, and then by considering how they interacted. This is not so much a matter of embarking on ?British History=, that new and fashionable historiographical concept. Rather, it is discussion of what was very obviously a major ?British Problem=. The period covered will be the reign of James VI and I, 1567-1625, which will allow time for proper consideration of the nature of the three kingdoms and the principality of Wales before they were united in 1603. The second part of the course will analyse what happened when they did. And it will end by assessing how far the experience of James=s reign was relevant to future survival or collapse. |
