Course description | The course encourages students to reflect upon the importance of the Middle Ages for understanding European history, and to engage directly with selected key primary texts. It also encourages them to consider medieval history in multi-disciplinary terms, and seeks to provide vital preparation for all students intending to continue with the study of history, especially medieval history, at Honours level. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
&ˇ demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of medieval history, specifically medieval European society and the changes that took place over the period 1200-1450, by way of essay and examination;
&ˇ demonstrate skill in research and writing by producing a sound and competent essay, in accordance with the extended common marking scale;
&ˇ demonstrate, by way of critical source analysis, an awareness of the nature and use of historical evidence;
&ˇ present evaluations and conclusions clearly in both written and oral form;
&ˇ evaluate the work of others, including peers;
&ˇ manage independently one&Šs personal timetable, workload and other priorities in order to meet established deadlines.

Assessment Information
Students will sit a two-hour Degree Examination in the May diet (50%) of the assessment. In addition they will submit one essay of c. 2,000 words (30%). Their participation in tutorials (20%) will be based in part on peer assessment (10%), with a pro forma questionnaire being completed by all members of the tutorial. The tutor assigns the other 10% on the basis of attendance and overall contribution to the class.
Visiting Students are required to sit the degree exam.
