| Course description | For centuries before the modern era, distant civilisations had engaged in the exchange of goods, artistic styles and ideas across vast expanses of land and sea. The multiple dialogues that thereby arose led to rich creative processes of transformation and appropriation. This course explores the global dimension of art in the Middle Ages, with a geographical scope spanning Europe, the Islamic world and China. It follows a broad chronological sequence and focuses on key moments and patterns of interaction, such as the role of pilgrimage as an artistic vector, the extensive commercial links that spanned the Indian Ocean in the 9th century, or the political unification of China with the eastern Islamic world under Mongol rule. The course thus offers a uniquely broad perspective on the visual culture of the Middle Ages. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be expected to have gained knowledge of decisive moments in the history of artistic exchange between Europe, the Middle East and Asia before 1500, and to have engaged in critical reflection on the factors that led to such interactions. The course will also feed into the historical options chosen by each student to help them achieve more focused knowledge of specific areas.
