Course description | The internship is a work placement, with a final report. The internship course for the MSc in History, Theory and Display is run in conjunction with that for the MSc in Scottish Art and Visual Culture. Each internship lasts for two semesters overall, and demands one full day per week from the student. The internship has three main elements: a plan of work drawn up between the host institution, the student, and the postgraduate director, the work itself, and a final report which is assessed. The work itself will depend on what can be provided by the host institution, but will be appropriate and sustaining for a student at this level: archival work, curatorial work, and work in public relations are all likely. Participating institutions are likely to include the National Museums of Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland, the Fruitmarket Gallery, the Talbot Rice Gallery, the City Art Centre (Edinburgh), Doggerfisher Gallery, and the special collections of Edinburgh University. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The internship has essentially three main learning outcomes. First, it relates postgraduate education directly to the experience of local institutions: it not only provides direct experience of objects in local collections, but the experience of working with them. Second, it develops skills outside the strictly academic context, with a view to providing an element for training for future careers in the arts. Third, through the report, it provides a space for critical reflection on Scottish institutions. |
Assessment Information
The internship will lead to a 7,000 word report divided as follows:
