| Course description | This core course introduces students to Scottish visual culture. Teaching comprises one seminar per week, supervised by the director of the programme, with individual topics taught by a range of lecturers and professionals in a variety of Edinburgh institutions who have agreed to participate. These include the National Galleries and National Museums of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, as well as various departments of the University itself (History of Art, Architecture, Economic and Social History). Topics will include the representation of the Scottish landscape, the image of Allan Ramsay, death and burial in post-Renaissance Edinburgh, Scottish printmaking, Sir Walter Scott, the Scottish Colourists, the Dukes of Hamilton as patrons, Scottish art collecting, and trends in Scottish modern art. The rationale for the course is the presentation of as wide as possible a range of material; to encourage the critical approach to Scottish visual culture; to develop skills around the first hand apprehension of objects. This course is based on the experience of material objects, including buildings, in the local environment. It offers wide opportunities for original research in one of Europe's most culturally rich cities. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| First, to present as wide as possible a range of material objects relating to the course, to be experienced at first hand; second, to encourage and develop a critical approach to these objects, in particular the development of knowledge about them in terms of their historical context; third, to develop a knowledge of the most important Scottish art institutions; fourth, to develop critical approaches to these institutions; fifth, to develop research, writing, and verbal presentation skills. |
Assessment Information
| Principal means of assessment is a 4,000 word essay. In addition each candidate's performance will be monitored through the presentation of seminar material. |
