| Course description | The course examines the portrayal of gender in medieval visual culture. The first half of the course considers the depiction of gender within a historical framework; specifically changes in society and theological paradigm shifts. The second half of the course analyzes specific themes, methodologies and case studies in gender literature. These include early approaches from the 1980s that focused on opposed pairs (Mary/Eve, Virgin/Whore) to more recent methodologies that include questions of otherness, androgyny, masculinity, sign systems, materials, desire and politics. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Learning Intent: Upon completion of this course students should have knowledge of:
? Significant paradigm shifts in social, political and theological perceptions of gender in the Latin West (with special emphasis on Northern Europe, Ireland and the British Isles) and Byzantium.
? Significant developments in gender literature, theories and methodologies applicable to medieval studies from the 1980s until present.
? The historical and art historical background of specific art objects from the early medieval period.
Process and Resources: I
The first half of the course introduces students to the historical background necessary to understanding early medieval art and gender. Seminars will centre on discussions of selected readings and images. In the second half of the course, seminars will be split between discussions of the reading and student presentations. We will visit the collections housed in the National Museum of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland.
Criteria for Assessment: Students will demonstrate learning through seminar discussion, presentations, essays, and exams. Student accomplishment will be assessed in terms of the breadth and depth of their knowledge of particular art objects as well as their level of engagement with the more theoretical aspects of the course.
