Course description | The course examines the portrayal of gender in medieval visual culture. The first half of the course considers the depiction of gender within a historical framework; specifically changes in society and theological paradigm shifts. The second half of the course analyzes specific themes, methodologies and case studies in gender literature. These include early approaches from the 1980s that focused on opposed pairs (Mary/Eve, Virgin/Whore) to more recent methodologies that include questions of otherness, androgyny, masculinity, sign systems, materials, desire and politics. |
