Course description | The course aims to provide an understanding of the key concepts and issues related to global health, including the global health architecture, the impact of vertical and horizontal programme interventions and the global burden of disease.
The course will provide an understanding of the differences in the context in which populations live today in developed and developing countries, and the resulting differences in their leading health problems; also, approaches to measuring the burden of health problems, understanding the 'architecture' of this burden, assessing the effectiveness of available health interventions to reduce the burden and rationing the available resources to reduce the burden in the most cost-effective way.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the candidate should:
* understand the key differences in the context in which populations live today in developed and developing countries,
* understand the resulting differences in their leading health problems;
* have an overview on the efforts and methods (and political rational) directed towards measuring and specifying the magnitude of health problems in the world (global burden of disease and Disability Affected Life Years DALYs)
* be equipped to identify key risk factors and missed opportunities for development, that contribute to overall disease burden, and particularly to non communicable disease burden.
* assess cost-effectiveness of health interventions available to reduce or remove the burden in different contexts
* appreciate international health policy issues related to prioritization of resources for health care and health research.

Assessment Information
Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme |
