Course description | This course will explore the role of emerging information and communication technologies in facilitating public health and patient care in the 21st century, with a particular focus on the needs of developing countries. It will examine global eHealth policies and strategies such as the WHO strategy, and look at case studies from national and regional initiatives in Africa and Asia. The course will also provide an introduction to the various applications of ICT in health

* Disease surveillance (e.g. geographic information systems)
* Pharmacovigilance & safety reporting
b) In Provision of care especially for chronic and non communicable disease management. through
* Remote care provision (telemedicine & telehealthcare)
* Clinical information systems (electronic health records, clinical decision support)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course the candidate will:
* Be familiar with the WHO eHealth strategy and key areas of progress in member states
* Gain an understanding of different types of eHealth interventions and their uses, especially in non communicable disease management
* Appreciate the economic, cultural and organisational challenges surrounding implementation of health informatics tools and services in lower-income countries
* Understand eHealth in the wider context of globalisation and the digital economy and be cognisant with case studies of effective and innovative uses of e-health technology
* Understand the challenges for integration and implementation of eHealth tools and services
o Leadership and change management
o Professional training (including e-learning models)
o Organisational redesign and adoption of standards

Assessment Information
Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme |
