Course description | This course will describe magnitude of vascular disease as a global health problem, review the myths and misconceptions about CVD in the developing world, and review the global risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
The Course will describe the relationship between metabolic syndrome and CVD, and the size and nature of the gap between knowledge and management of vascular diseases in the developing world.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course the candidate should be able to understand
* The different risk factors for vascular disease, notably diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia.
* How the above risk factors are affected by lifestyle/behavioural influences.
* The impact of changing diet, reduced physical activity, increasing obesity and the aging population on the increasing prevalence of vascular disease in the developing world.
* Environmental factors and chronic lung disease - eg effect of use of
wood fuel, smoking, occupational exposure etc.
* Identify patients at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
* Strategies for primary prevention of vascular disease.
* Recent advances in the effective multidisciplinary management of cardiometabolic risk, including appropriate use of cholesterol-lowering agents and drugs that inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system.

Assessment Information
Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme |
