Course description | This course introduces students to a range of techniques employed in both qualitative and quantitative geographic data collection and analysis. Lectures will provide students with the theoretical foundations and practical skills will be developed in a broad range of techniques used by geographers. Techniques in Geography covers instruction in the use of computer applications, qualitative methods, introductory geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and statistical analysis. The primary objective of this course is to give students a broad foundation in quantitative and qualitative geographic methods and to ensure that all of our students have a base level of computing knowledge (e.g. Excel, MS Word, etc). This course is the core methods course for year 2 and is valuable preparation for year 3 and year 4 Geography courses as well as the development of the dissertation. It is required if you wish to major in Geography. The course caters for students with all levels of mathematical background but assumes that students have some familiarity with computers. |
