Course description | Social and Cultural Geography considers why geography matters to the analysis and understanding social relations, cultural identity and social inequality. We examine how social life is structured at a variety of scales - with respect to bodies, homes, neighbourhoods, cities, nations, and the world as a whole - drawing from policies, practices and everyday lives in Western Europe, North America and Australasia. The many case studies are used to consider how social inequalities are made, and how social identities are negotiated, around the themes of class, gender, sexuality, health, disability and 'race'.
The overriding concern of the course is to show how, and consider why, the material and the cultural aspects of social life are linked. In particular we explore the way social inequalities are not only made (through the unequal distribution of incomes and wealth) but also legitimised and contested as individuals and groups struggle over meanings and representations. |
