Course description | Baroque is essentially ?an Italian phenomenon? (Panofsky), and it reveals a bursting universe in a new balance of elements between arts and sciences, senses and form, matter and energy. Like a phonograph needle reading the tracks of a record back and forth, we will find the original ?scratch? of this modern (Italian) universe tackling the meaning of the Baroque style, listening to the madrigals of Monteverdi and Vivaldi?s programme music, analyzing the paintings of Caravaggio and Artemisia, reading the poems of Marino, Ariosto and Tasso, the literary and scientific theories of Galileo, a philosophical play by Bruno, the ingenious heresies of Menocchio, and the hilarious stories of Bertoldo and Bertoldino.
