| Course description | Poet and film director, playwright and novelist, critic and journalist, Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-75) had an indisputable though controversial influence at every level of Italian post-war culture. $ùIf Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Camille Paglia, Madonna, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Michael Moore, and Noam Chomsky were rolled up into a single person, one might begin to get some idea of the impact Pasolini had on Italian society&© (Lawton). Petrolio (1972-75) is his last novel, an experimental work which remained unfinished. It was published in 1992, a few years before the blockbuster anthology of Italian young writers Gioventù cannibale (1996). Contrasting the $ùyoung cannibals&© phenomenon with Pasolini&©s novel and excerpts from his films, poems, and articles, we will analyze and discuss the function of literature in Italian contemporary culture. |
